I have no intentions of ever running for public office; but if I did, I don’t think I could win (at least not in a national election). Why not? Because I’m not very good at being politically correct. We live in an age of political correctness. Therefore, politicians need to be very careful of not only what they say, but also how they say it; because they don’t want to offend a potential voter.

As a pastor, I also want to be careful of what I say and how I say it, but not for the same reasons. Although I do not want to offend unnecessarily, there are times where I have to be offensive. Why? Because the Bible is offensive! The Bible is not politically correct! As God speaks to us through the Bible, he tells us not what we want to hear, but what we need to hear. And very often the things we need to hear, offend us.

Take for example what God says in 1 Corinthians 6:9-10: “Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.”

God’s Word is offensive! It offends those who want to have sex outside of marriage, because God calls that sin. It offends those who want to live in a homosexual relationship, because God calls that sin. It offends those who have greedy thoughts, those who drink too much, those who speak poorly of others, because God calls those things for what they really are: sins against God. And not only that, but God also says that they “will not inherit the kingdom of God!” Anyone who lives in unrepentant sin is thereby rejecting God and his salvation. Thankfully God doesn’t stop there, so keep reading!

God’s Word is offensive, but notice the reason why. God offends us with our sin, so that he may heal us from it. The very next verse in 1 Corinthians 6 says, “And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God” (1 Cor. 6:11).

God’s Word offends us with our own sinfulness so that we might repent of those sins, receive forgiveness in Jesus and, through that forgiveness, find strength to live not for ourselves, but for him. God offends us by his Word so that he may save us through it! Therefore, give thanks to God that the Bible is not politically correct!
